If you are interested in a campfire on the beach, you can ask about the rules at the Visitor Center. Over on the bay side, we like to explore at Old Ferry Landing, wade in the bay a bit, and then drive over to the Bay Life trail. The kayaking program is very popular and requires advance reservations. There are sometimes ranger-led sessions like shore fishing, campfires, and Bay discovery we've done most of them at one time or another and have learned a lot. You can find a list of programs on the NPS website, usually posted by the month. ![]() Because the beach hasn't has the replenishment of Ocean City it doesn't have as much of a shore break, and you can see more wildlife like sanderlings, hermit crabs (I love to find these!), and of course the horses. On a Saturday or July 4 things get pretty busy as you get close to noon, and the line of cars waiting to pay at the kiosk is long on other weekdays that we've visited it's been well-populated but not packed. There is a tiny little concession stand but we usually bring a cooler with drinks as well as our chairs, beach toys, etc. (We go with our kids so we stick to the guarded beach, though) ![]() There is a guarded part of the beach that is marked with flags and not open to surfing outside of the guarded area everyone is more spread out. The road goes on for a bit before you get to the payment kiosk, and we typically turn in at the next parking lot to get to the North Beach day use area. Once you arrive across the bridge, you would go straight to get to the MD State Park and turn right to go to the National Seashore. (The ones on the NPS sites on the island are now chemical toilets) They have a large relief map outside so that you can see the entire island plus they have nice restrooms. It's great to stop at the Visitor Center before heading out to the island. We really enjoy visiting Assateague each summer.
